MetConnect LDA offers expert Portugal visa renewal help for all major visa types – from D7 (Passive Income/Retirement) and D2 (Entrepreneur) to D6 (Family Reunification), D4/D5 (Student), D8 (Digital Nomad), Golden Visa (Investment), job-seeker and employment visas, as well as standard residence permit renewals.

Lisbon’s terracotta rooftops and historic architecture

Recent Portuguese law (Decree-Law 41-A/2024) even extends the validity of expired visas/permits until June 30, 2025, but it’s best to apply for renewal well before that. We guide you step-by-step through documentation, appointments, and any legal representation, so you can continue living in Portugal without disruption.

Who Needs to Renew a Visa or Permit

All non-EU residents on temporary visas or residence cards must renew when due. This includes holders of:

D7 Visa (Passive Income/Retirement) –
Grants a 2‑year permit (renewable for 2 more years)
D2 Visa (Entrepreneurship/Startup) –
2‑year permit, extendable by 3 more years.
D6 Visa (Family Reunification) –
Typically a 1–2 year permit that must be renewed after expiry
Student Visas (D4/D5) –
Usually a 1‑year permit, renewable each year while enrolled
D8 Visa (Digital Nomad) –
Long-term permit valid 2 years, renewable for 3 additional years
Golden Visa (Investment) –
Initial permit (1 year) then longer (renewable for 2–3 year periods)
D3 Visa (Highly-Qualified Work) –
2-year permit, renewable up to a total of five years
Job-Seeker Visa –
Initial 120 days, extendable once for 60 days
When to Renew?
Most visas should be renewed 60–90 days before expiration. For example, Golden Visa holders must start renewal 30–90 days before the card expires. Don’t wait until the last minute: AIMA (Portugal’s immigration agency) often has long appointment waits, especially in Lisbon/Porto..
Who Can Apply?
You can renew if you have a valid permit or one expired less than 6 months ago justica. Even if your visa recently lapsed, the law currently allows a grace period, but you must schedule your renewal quickly. After July 2025, only active appointments will be honored, so apply early.

How and When to Renew

Gather Required Documents.
Each visa type has specific requirements, but generally you will need:
Passport & Current Permit:
Your valid passport and your existing residence permit (or one expired ≤6 months).
Photos and Forms:
Passport‑style photos and completed renewal application forms (provided at appointment).
Proof of Income/Means:
Bank statements, pension letters or employment contracts showing sufficient funds.
Proof of Accommodation:
Rental agreement, property deed or a certificate from the parish council confirming your address.
Portuguese Taxes & Social Security:
Certificates showing you’re up‑to‑date on tax and social security contributions, if applicable.
Health Insurance:
Valid health/medical insurance covering Portugal (for students or certain visas).
Criminal Record:
Clean criminal record certificates (from your home country and Portugal) or authorization to consult your record

Additional Visa-Specific Documents: For example, student visa renewals require proof of enrollment; D2 Visa renewals may need updated company/financial records; D6 Visa renewals require proof the family relationship and sponsor’s means. (MetConnect will check your case and ensure all paperwork is complete.)

Book Your Appointment.
In Portugal all renewals are handled by the new Agência para a Integração, Migrações e Asilo (AIMA) (formerly SEF). You usually need an appointment:
AIMA Portal or Hotline:
You or your representative must book an appointment on the AIMA website or by calling (+351) 217 115 000 / 965 903 700. We can do this for you on our [aima appointment portugal] page.
Local Registry Offices (IRN):
New law: Many routine renewals can now be done at any Civil Registry office by appointment. This “home office” option speeds processing. MetConnect will confirm whether your renewal qualifies for IRN or must go through AIMA
Attend the Appointment.
On the scheduled date, go (or have MetConnect accompany you) to the AIMA or registry office:
Submit your documents and provide biometrics.
Pay the renewal fee (varies by visa type).
The officer will issue a new residency card valid for the next period.
After Submission:
Processing can take weeks or months. Due to AIMA backlogs, delays are common. We will track your application, handle any follow-ups, and notify you when your new permit/card is ready. Golden Visa renewals are a special case: you must renew 30–90 days before expiry and resubmit updated criminal records and fees. Under recent law, Golden Visa renewal permits are now issued for 3 years instead of 2, reducing how often you must renew.

Common Delays and Rejections

AIMA Backlogs:
Since the 2023 SEF restructuring, AIMA inherited a huge backlog of cases. Many clients experience long waits for appointments and decisions. Golden Visa holders have even sued to force AIMA to issue rulings. MetConnect knows how to navigate these delays, and we can help expedite your case where possible.
Documentation Gaps:
The most common reason for rejection is missing or insufficient paperwork. For example, failing to prove sufficient income, not having valid health insurance, or lacking up‑to‑date criminal records can cause denials. We meticulously review every application to avoid these pitfalls.
Overstays and Missed Deadlines:
If you stay past your permit’s expiry without having applied, you could face fines or entry bans. (Fortunately, visas expired since Feb 2020 remain valid until June 30, 2025. if you have a pending renewal, but after that you must have an active appointment.) If you’ve missed the deadline, we advise immediate action. MetConnect can file the necessary applications or appeals to regularize your status.
Appeals and Legal Support:
If a renewal is denied, MetConnect’s legal team steps in. Portuguese law allows appeals to the administrative courts, and judges often order AIMA to decide on overstayed/renewal cases. We prepare appeal briefs and represent you in court if needed. Our /immigration-legal-support-portugal/ service ensures you have strong representation in complex cases.
